Tina Fey to Write and Produce Comedy Series Starring Ted Danson for NBC

The Hollywood Reporter just announced today that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock will write and produce a new comedy series for NBC and Ted Danson will be starring in it. The series is untitled as of right now, but it has been ordered straight to series. Read the press release from NBC below to find out more!

Three giants of NBC’s comedy Hall of Fame family – Ted Danson, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock – are joining forces for a straight-to-series order.

Danson, nominated for an Emmy Award record 13th time Tuesday for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, will play the lead in NBC’s upcoming comedy series from award-winning writers/producers Fey and Carlock. Universal Television will produce.

The series is about a wealthy businessman who runs for mayor of Los Angeles for all the wrong reasons. Once he wins he has to figure out what he stands for, gain the respect of his staff, and connect with his teenage daughter, all while controlling the coyote population.

“We are thrilled to be back home at NBC and writing for one of the network’s greatest stars of all time, Mary Steenburgen’s husband, Ted,” said Fey and Carlock.

“We are so excited that this is the first NBC show we get to greenlight straight to series,” said George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment. “It’s with talent that we know and love and who have worked on some of the most beloved shows in our network’s history. We can’t wait.”

Danson, who stars in the critically beloved and Emmy-nominated comedy “The Good Place,” which is about to begin its final season, is one of the most celebrated and respected actors in television history, known for an array of exceptional performances. He is most memorably known for his portrayal of Boston bartender Sam Malone on NBC’s multi-award winning and iconic comedy “Cheers,” which ran for 11 seasons and won four Emmys as Outstanding Comedy Series.

As producers, Fey and Carlock won three Emmys for their seminal comedy “30 Rock” for Outstanding Comedy Series. Over its seven-season run, “30 Rock” won 16 Emmys. Fey has won six Emmys for writing and/or acting for “30 Rock” and “Saturday Night Live.” Fey and Carlock are producers of the Netflix/Universal Television series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” The show was Emmy nominated four times for Outstanding Comedy Series. Production wrapped this week on the show’s upcoming interactive special.

The Carlock-Fey project will be produced by Universal Television, Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts Entertainment. Robert Carlock, Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond and David Miner will executive produce. Eric Gurian, President, will oversee for Little Stranger.

“I’m thrilled that Mean Girls will become available to school, community and regional theaters, because those are my favorite kinds of theaters! I can’t wait to see diverse ensembles around the country make the show their own,” said Tina Fey.

“We are very excited for Mean Girls to become part of the canon of shows that help nurture the next generation of musical theater fans and performers across the globe,” stated Lorne Michaels.

“What a genuine thrill for MTI to represent Mean Girls and be able to bring this hilarious and meaningful musical to theatre groups around the world,” stated Drew Cohen, MTI’s President and CEO. “We have already received countless inquiries from producers around the world at all levels-regional theaters, community theaters, universities, high schools-for the simple reason that the show delivers, both artistically and as box office gold. Three months after wrapping its four-season run on Netflix, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is returning.

The streamer on Wednesday announced that it is reteaming with creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock for an interactive special featuring stars Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane. The special is similar to Netflix’s Black Mirror film Bandersnatch in that viewers will be able to make choices for the characters.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020,” Fey said Wednesday during a Netflix For Your Consideration Emmy panel. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.”

Fey and Carlock will return to executive produce alongside Jeff Richmond, Sam Means and David Miner. The special, like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, hails from Universal Television.
